Our Catholic Life

Our Catholic school is a diverse, nurturing and dynamic community which is faithful to Jesus, welcoming to all and provides a learning environment where everyone can succeed.

Aspects of Our Catholic Life

Come and See Curriculum

We follow the Come and See Programme for Religious Education in our school from Nursery through to Year 6.  Our topics for each class can be found on our class pages.  We send out a newsletter each term providing parents with our themes for the term and any important religious dates.

Throughout the year we also study two other religions.

Each year we study different aspects of Judaism and Islam.  We are very fortunate to have close links with our local Mosque who help us to learn about the Islamic faith by allowing us to visit the Mosque to improve our understanding of Islam.

We feel it is important to give the children an experience and understanding of other faiths to help them understand the importance of our multi-cultural society.

Collective Worship

Collective Worship is an important aspect of our Religious Education and is celebrated daily.

We pray together as a class, as a Key Stage and as a whole school.  As a school that has many children of different faiths, we respect the different ways that people pray at the start of our Collective Worship whilst reflecting on messages taught to us by Jesus.

Collective Worship is an ideal opportunity to celebrate.  We celebrate important Liturgical events throughout the year as well as important events both locally and nationally.  Children are encouraged to plan their own Collective Worship following the structure of Gather, Listen, Respond and Go Forth.

Parents are invited into school throughout the year to participate in Collective Worship with each class.

‘A Journey in Love’ (Relationship and Sex Education)

‘A Journey in Love’ is the RSE scheme (Relationship and Sex Education) that we use at St. Nicholas’ Catholic Primary School.  It is a resource created by Sister Jude Groden of BRES. It is the recommended programme of study for Catholic schools for Relationship and Sex Education, and has been written as a progressive scheme of work that supports the Religious Education, PSHE and Science curriculum taught within the school.

A Journey in Love programme content:

An aspect of the mystery of love is taught in each year group; children are encouraged to marvel at the wonder and beauty of God’s creative love. This is reflected through a series of progressive and developmental tasks, activities and reflections which focus on physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development.
