Come & See
We follow the Come and See Programme for Religious Education in our school from Nursery through to Year 6. Our topics for each class can be found on our class pages. We send out a newsletter each term providing parents with our themes for the term and any important religious dates. Copies of our newsletter can be found here :RE Newsletter.
Throughout the year we also study two other religions. Each year we study different aspects of Judaism and Islam. We are very fortunate to have close links with our local Mosque who help us to learn about the Islamic faith by allowing us to visit the Mosque to improve our understanding of Islam. We feel it is important to give the children an experience and understanding of other faiths to help them understand the importance of our multi-cultural society.
Pupils enjoyed exploring the sacrament of Baptism.
Year 1 have been learning all about Christingle. Christingles are made from an orange, red ribbon, 4 small sticks, dried fruits or sweets and a lit candle. They are used by Christians to celebrate Jesus as the Light of the World.
Advent and Christmas
At the start of Advent, Father Dominic visits to help us to prepare for the coming of Jesus. Together we make Wreaths in each class to help us to count down to the day of Jesus’ birth. We also try to help other less fortunate by raising money for charities by Carol singing in our local community and fundraising activities.
Lent and Palm Sunday
In the Spring Term we celebrate Lent. At the start of Lent, Father Dominic helps us to remember the purpose of Lent in our Ash Wednesday Service.
Throughout Lent, we try to grow closer to Jesus by helping others. Each year, we raise funds for both local and international charities. Our charities for this year were: Mission Together, The Good Shepherd and Comic Relief. We raise funds in a variety of ways including cake sales and raffles.
Towards the end of Lent we remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us in our preparation for Holy Week. Father Dominic came to help us to prepare for Holy Week. We watched the Miracle Maker together and made Palm Crosses to prepare for this special week.
We also remembered Jesus’ walk into Jerusalem and the washing of the feet.
Children in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 participated in making Easter Bonnets and Easter cards.
As part of Year Three’s Listening and Sharing topic, Year 3 devised questions to research Mass and our Cathedral. Father Tony, the Dean of the Cathedral, came to visit Year 3 to answer their questions about his life as Priest and the importance of the Mass celebration. We hope you enjoy the video below of Father Tony answering some of their questions during his visit.
