Year 3

Welcome to our Class Page

September 2020

Welcome back to school Year 3! We are so excited to see you all and get to know you properly.

We know that some of you are probably feeling a little bit worried about coming back to school, after spending so much time away during lockdown. Some of you may also be feeling super excited about getting back to see your friends! Some of you may not even really know how you are feeling yet! That is all perfectly normal and we will spend some time over the next few days and weeks talking about those feelings and helping each other settle into our new class and our new school year.

We are very lucky in Year 3, because we have lots of grown-ups to help and look after us. In our class this year will be:

Mrs McGaughey - Teacher (Monday - Wednesday)

Mrs Baines - Teacher (Thursday & Friday)

Mrs Heller - Learning Support Assistant

Ms Dore - 1:1 Support Assistant

Ms Jones - 1:1 Support Assistant

Ms Jones - 1:1 Support Assistant

We have lots of fun activities planned for you over the next few weeks and can't wait to see you! smileyheart

Year 3's PE lesson will take place on Monday each week. Please make sure your child has the correct PE kit for lessons. PE kit consists of a white t-shirt, black/navy shorts, leggings or joggers and black PE pumps. Kits should be brought to school on Monday morning and should be taken home and washed after school. Kits will not be kept in school at this time.

Homework and Book Bags

At the moment, your child does not need to bring their book bag into school. Once the children have settled into school and we have had an opportunity to assess their progress, we will begin to set homework and provide home reading books. You will receive more information about this in the coming weeks.

Pencil Cases and Personal Belongings

All children in Year 3 have been provided with a stationery pack containing everything they need for the school day. Children do not need to bring any additional pencil cases or stationery into school. Children should not bring any personal belongings into school, other than what they need for the school day (PE kits, lunch bags and water bottles.)

Water Bottle

If your child would like to bring a reusable water bottle to class, please make sure it is labelled with their name. Water bottles should be brought to school each morning and taken home at the end of the day to be washed.

New information about Year 3 work for Summer Term has been added below the school closure message

School Closures 2020

Dear Parents and Year 3 Children

We hope you are all well, keeping safe and looking after each other. We are really missing you all and can't wait to see you all back at school when the time is right.

We hope you are managing to fill your time at home with fun activities and you are enjoying this time with your family. It is very strange for us not getting to hear your stories, so if you want to let us know what you've been up to, you can always tweet us @year3stnicsliv or @stnicsliv

There are lots of different ways you can be having fun and learning at home and we're sure some of you will have been spending your time reading, drawing, baking, playing board games, building Lego and lots more!

If you are looking for more ideas, we have set up a Google classroom page, which we will keep up to date with activities linked to our learning in school. You all have your own log-in details and more information about how to access the page can be found below.

In addition to this, you should also have your log-in details for TTRockstars and Spelling Shed. Just 5 minutes a day playing these games will help to keep your minds active and keep up the skills you have been developing in school. If you do not have your log-in details for these websites at home, or you have lost them, just send a message to us through the Google Classroom page and we will sort it out for you.

If your child was given a Nessy log-in while at school, it is really important that they try to access this as much as possible, to support their reading and spelling skills.

We will continue adding information to this page, the Google Classroom page and our twitter page. Please don't be worried about trying to do everything that we suggest. These are all just ideas and we are just as interested in any other work or activities that you are doing at home, so try to keep in touch and let us know how you are.

The most important thing right now is that you are safe and happy. Take some time to relax when you can. One of our favourite ways to relax is by reading, so choose your favourite book or a book you haven't read before, snuggle up and get reading! Let us know if you have discovered a new story that has inspired you, or rediscovered an old favourite.

More information can be found in the sections below.

For now, take care and stay safe.

Best wishes

Mrs McGaugheysmiley & Mrs Baines smiley

Welcome To Our Year 3 Class Page

Thank you for visiting our Class Page.

Year 3 are taught by Mrs McGaughey (Mon-Wed) and Mrs Baines (Thurs-Fri). We also have some support from Mrs Heller.

In Year 3, we are working hard to become more independent learners and take on the challenges of Key Stage 2. We enjoy sharing our ideas, celebrating our achievements and exploring new ways of learning.

This term in Science, we are learning about rocks and soils. We will be researching and learning about different types of rocks and soils, how fossils are formed and how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are formed.

In Geography this term, we will be learning about the volcanoes and earthquakes. We will find out how volcanoes and earthquakes are formed and what impact they have on the world.

In Come & See, our topics this term are ‘Listening’ and ‘Sharing’. We will be thinking about how we can use Jesus’ teachings to help us at home or at school.

In English lessons this term, we will be basing our writing on Roald Dahl's The Twits, including persuasive writing and story writing with dialogue. We will read 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes and write our own newspaper articles and kennings poetry.

In maths, we will be learning about multiplication, division, fractions and properties of shapes. We will continue to use times tables rockstars to support our learning of basic skills.

Our PE lessons take place on Tuesday each week. This term we are learning to dance based on different types of weather.

Please make sure your child has the correct PE kit in school each week. PE kits can be brought into school and kept in class for the duration of the half term.

PE kit consists of white t-shirt, blue/black shorts or leggings and black PE pumps. Please ensure that your child’s PE kit is fully labelled with their name.

Homework is given out on a Friday and should be returned by the following Tuesday.

Spellings are also given out on Friday for children in Mrs McGaughey’s spelling group. We have a spelling test on a Wednesday morning, so children should spend some time learning their spellings at home to prepare for this.

Your child’s reading book and diary should be brought into school every day, to enable them to read their book in school. Books will be changed throughout the week, when we feel your child is ready for the next book. Children should continue to read their book at home as much as possible.  Please sign your child’s diary when you listen to them read at home.

Useful websites:

In addition to the homework given out each week, children in Year 3 have access to a number of educational websites to help with their learning.

Log-in details for each of these websites can be found in your child's homework diary.
